NEW GRANT PROGRAM AIMS TO IMPROVE SAFETY & ENHANCE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DOWNTOWN
WINNIPEG – The City of Winnipeg is accepting applications to the Building Exterior Lighting Grant Program to encourage downtown building owners to invest in lighting that will create a more inviting and safe pedestrian environment. The grant program, which is part of a multi-year downtown public safety strategy, has allocated up to $300,000 over a two-year period to support improved exterior lighting on downtown building façades.
“Improved lighting was a key recommendation of the downtown safety strategy approved by Council earlier this year,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “This program supports building owners to improve exterior lighting on their properties and will not only make their buildings more welcoming but also help improve safety in the public areas around these buildings.”
Grants will be evaluated by the City’s Urban Planning and Design Division and approved applicants will be granted up to $5,000 to cover professional design consulting fees. The grant program will match up to $10,000 in eligible costs per exterior façade of the building.
